Hon. Colonial Secretary.

I submit a statement of accounts in connection with

the accommodation and maintenance of the Shanghai Refugees. I

regret the delay in submitting these accounts, but as much was

done originally through the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels Company

Limited, accounts were not submitted until they had been passed

by the Hotel Company's auditors.

In addition to these figures, we have of course, an unknown liability for loss and depreciation to Army stores lent to us and also to the Hong Kong & Shanghai Hotels Company Limited

who originally provided a considerable amount of sheets, pillows

etc.

Against this there will be a certain sum, not large, I am afraid, from the sale of equipment, camp beds, etc. after the

centres shut down.
